Sodium Thiosulfate 30%

Sodium Thiosulfate is an inorganic compound which can be used for the neutralization of chlorine.

Other applications:

  • Lixiviant in gold ore processing
  • Water dechlorination
  • Textiles/paper processing to reduce chlorine levels in process water

Lixiviant

Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) is used as a lixiviant in gold ore processing to leach gold from ore that cannot be easily treated with cyanide. This is because some types of gold ore, such as those containing tellurides or refractory ores, are not amenable to cyanide leaching due to the formation of stable complexes or the presence of sulfide minerals that consume cyanide. Sodium thiosulfate is an alternative lixiviant that can be used to extract gold from these types of ores. It forms a soluble complex with gold (thiosulfate-gold complex) that can be recovered from the leach solution by precipitation or adsorption onto activated carbon.

Water Treatment

Sodium thiosulfate is commonly used to reduce chlorine levels in water. Chlorine is a commonly used disinfectant in water treatment. Sodium thiosulfate is an effective chlorine neutralizer, as it reacts with chlorine to form sodium chloride (table salt) and sodium sulfate. Sodium thiosulfate has several uses in industrial process water applications. One of its main uses is as a dechlorinating agent. However, sodium thiosulfate has other properties that make it useful in industrial process water applications:

  1. pH adjustment: Sodium thiosulfate can be used to adjust the pH of process water. It is a weak acid, so it can lower the pH of alkaline water. It is also a weak base, so it can raise the pH of acidic water. This makes it a useful tool for maintaining the optimal pH range for certain industrial processes.
  2. Heavy metal removal: Sodium thiosulfate can also be used to remove heavy metals from process water. It forms stable complexes with certain metals, such as copper, lead, and mercury, which can then be removed from the water through precipitation or filtration.
  3. Bleach neutralization: Sodium thiosulfate can neutralize bleach in process water. This is important in industries such as textile manufacturing, where bleach is used to whiten fabrics. Sodium thiosulfate can be added to the wash water to remove any residual bleach, preventing damage to the fabric.
  4. Oxygen scavenging: Sodium thiosulfate can also be used as an oxygen scavenger in process water. It reacts with dissolved oxygen to form sulfate ions, which are harmless in most industrial processes. This prevents oxygen from reacting with other chemicals in the water and causing corrosion or other unwanted reactions.
