Magnesium Bisulfite (MBS)

Magnesium Bisulfite (MBS) is a strong oxygen scavenger and reducing agent.  Magnesium Bisulfite is sodium free and effective in removal of organic compounds from gas streams.

• Uses include chrome reduction, chlorine reduction, peroxide reduction, silver halide reduction, bichromate reduction, and sulfonation agent. 
• Easier to dose than SO2, lower corrosion potential than SO2, less pH impact to processes than SO2. 
• Primarily used in the reduction of chrome.

Oxygen Scavenger

Magnesium bisulfite is often used as an oxygen scavenger in various industrial applications, including in the food and beverage industry, pulp and paper industry, and oil and gas industry. When added to a system, such as a pipeline, storage tank or a boiler feedwater system, magnesium bisulfite reacts with dissolved oxygen in the water to form magnesium oxide and sulfur dioxide. The sulfur dioxide is then further reacted with the remaining magnesium bisulfite to form magnesium sulfate and water. The use of magnesium bisulfite as an oxygen scavenger helps to prevent corrosion in the system by reducing the amount of dissolved oxygen present. Oxygen can react with metals, causing corrosion and reducing the life of the system. The use of magnesium bisulfite can extend the life of pipelines and storage tanks, as well as reduce the amount of maintenance required. Magnesium bisulfite is a preferred oxygen scavengers due to its lower toxicity and lower potential for forming harmful byproducts. It is also less expensive than some of the alternative oxygen scavengers. Overall, the use of magnesium bisulfite as an oxygen scavenger is an effective way to prevent corrosion and extend the life of industrial systems. 

Water Treatment

Magnesium bisulfite is used in water treatment to remove chlorine and other oxidizing agents from water. It helps to neutralize the chlorine.
